The Pursuit of Happiness

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”

-Aristotle

Entrepreneurs dedicate their time and energy to build something new and to create value, striving to turn their hopes and dreams into reality. This requires sacrifice, whether it’s giving up sleep or a social life, or even financial stability. After the countless hours and energy it takes to put it all on the line, the hope is that this entrepreneurial pursuit will lead to a better future. Ultimately, the entrepreneurial pursuit is a pursuit of happiness.

Entrepreneurship is a long-term game. There is a lot of work and risk that goes into the role and responsibilities of being an entrepreneur. Founders are willing to take this path because of the joy and happiness that it brings throughout the process and promises for the future. And since happiness is “a state of well-being and contentment; joy,” entrepreneurship is a pursuit of happiness.

One of the biggest perks of entrepreneurship is freedom. You are free to choose what you do and pave your own path. You pick your hours, where you work, and who you work with. You call the shots and make the decisions. At any point, you have the power to make a new choice, and therefore, you have the choice to pursue what will make you happy.

Building a business requires certain components – an idea, customers, a value proposition, a business model, etc. These pieces come together to achieve success. But how do you know when you’ve reached this point? What are you trying to achieve? What is the purpose of this? What is your purpose? What legacy do you want to leave? Ultimately, what will make you happy?

Ask yourself these questions to help make sure your entrepreneurial journey and path for happiness are.

  1. What makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning?
  2. What are you passionate about? What are you doing about this?
  3. What things do you put off doing and why?
  4. When you face obstacles, can you see potential solutions?
  5. Who is your support system? Who do you turn to when things are good or bad?
  6. What are you proud of?

Building your own company is building your own happiness. If you’re going to work hard and put all you’ve got into it, you might as well be happy along the way!
